Two of the blog hops were for Island Batiks with their brand ambassadors: Tammy Silvers' new line "Coastal Mist", and then there was the New Beginnings Blog Hop. Then I went hopping with Fresh Snow Hop from Marian's Seams to Be Sew blog.<div><br></div><div>I was diligent in following these hops, because I have fallen in love with Island Batiks. And I must have been pretty lucky, because I won a few prizes!</div><div><br></div><div>From Maria Michaels Designs, I won a one-year subscription to Quilt Pattern Magazine online. That looks like a great resource and a fun, sharing community of quilters.</div><div><br></div><div>Next, Nancy Myers of "Patchwork Breeze" gave away this gorgeous 5-inch "stamp pack" of Sea Canyon by Island Batik. The colors are so beautiful, and I need to narrow down what I want to do with the pack! Island Batik really knows how to do purple, green, and blue right!</div><div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf97SXyREsSh8PFEcVdoxHbWjIQq5ESjxws3xFJOr0ruOpT3l2TciKjNUmUlnvoqIvvMLux37tch309MlLHbI6YzNc0PS5ORouifF-NrzgBJidtRCm2gGpdUn9uP6nNXaCIRQMwZlx_PE/s640/blogger-image-615150249.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf97SXyREsSh8PFEcVdoxHbWjIQq5ESjxws3xFJOr0ruOpT3l2TciKjNUmUlnvoqIvvMLux37tch309MlLHbI6YzNc0PS5ORouifF-NrzgBJidtRCm2gGpdUn9uP6nNXaCIRQMwZlx_PE/s640/blogger-image-615150249.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Oh yeah, I can't forget the reason that I won! Nancy wanted help naming her design for the New Beginnings challenge quilt that she created. I don't know if I'm great at names, but I do love puns and wordplay. I replied with a few of my ideas, and Nancy's husband read through all the replies/entries, and chose mine: "Dancing DNA". What a fun contest, and I feel honored to name her design!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcENMUNGRLtYOy3nzC9m5VbKX-2410uMGAtHKN-B7tRoeMacf00qK_vdCavbkDHJ0Sp368BakJ_ZPet3QfEtddiqG75rKLqhQ-ubLa2nH5EeOVGoWqqXn9yqjtI92DOtD7itsqO107t48/s640/blogger-image-1905465425.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcENMUNGRLtYOy3nzC9m5VbKX-2410uMGAtHKN-B7tRoeMacf00qK_vdCavbkDHJ0Sp368BakJ_ZPet3QfEtddiqG75rKLqhQ-ubLa2nH5EeOVGoWqqXn9yqjtI92DOtD7itsqO107t48/s640/blogger-image-1905465425.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>And finally, I won this little bundle of 1/2-yards of autumn-colored Island Batiks. Look at those camouflaged deer on that pumpkin-orange background! And pine needles and swirls. This one was from Pam Geisel's blog "For Quilts Sake". She is so talented and creative, and it's a lot of fun following her blog. I love seeing what she's up to with each challenge as an Island Batik Ambassador.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPF7fhVb-YMiSj4i29gQbkUZ96syuNQw3ICdJA1CDH5MgOFitaHj9brhukUpFsxdEVoSSRwbEfani3ZX3vxk3KXjwICXFjdj2znjuM7EDLJKwkYssMy-jSHU3naE8p34lR5Lb1vBLBFNE/s640/blogger-image--314301034.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPF7fhVb-YMiSj4i29gQbkUZ96syuNQw3ICdJA1CDH5MgOFitaHj9brhukUpFsxdEVoSSRwbEfani3ZX3vxk3KXjwICXFjdj2znjuM7EDLJKwkYssMy-jSHU3naE8p34lR5Lb1vBLBFNE/s640/blogger-image--314301034.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And then, sometime in November or December, I won a giveaway from APQ (American Patchwork and Quilting): an archive of their magazines and patterns! How cool is that! It's going to be a great resource and a lot of fun to read all the digital back-issues.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHHfNE4uSfkl_Bap7Fs4p9RwNESmebjK9Y6CT49UgrUlgajfmKdAMlU7emXLOJ8EekzLF2Begh5CMfuMKOpO0MOF0qqB6t0C-MQFsHGuR1iT_iMwzlgbRWsk-BZTm6WBbk4AUCyO5J41M/s640/blogger-image--1831147257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHHfNE4uSfkl_Bap7Fs4p9RwNESmebjK9Y6CT49UgrUlgajfmKdAMlU7emXLOJ8EekzLF2Begh5CMfuMKOpO0MOF0qqB6t0C-MQFsHGuR1iT_iMwzlgbRWsk-BZTm6WBbk4AUCyO5J41M/s640/blogger-image--1831147257.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjck9E5jDJUdpQoi4BRvuE1fBNyqWojEYZTiWzD9nkWGP3VoXju4gEN5Rz_n9fT8iZQzfnmMwCf1hidWvEvuC7wMMzE0MrWlOzWNzfrfS4Ykg4ETSzHgdmojIz_Y0JV3i74l4dOyOr_iWU/s640/blogger-image--476657461.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjck9E5jDJUdpQoi4BRvuE1fBNyqWojEYZTiWzD9nkWGP3VoXju4gEN5Rz_n9fT8iZQzfnmMwCf1hidWvEvuC7wMMzE0MrWlOzWNzfrfS4Ykg4ETSzHgdmojIz_Y0JV3i74l4dOyOr_iWU/s640/blogger-image--476657461.jpg"></a></div><br></div>I feel pretty special right now, and I'm so thankful for these wonderful prizes. They've been bright spots in a very snowy winter with my health problems. They make me want to try harder to get up and get through this pile of quilttoppers and quilt them, and also inspire me to practice designing. I would really like to be an ambassador for Island Batik and Bernina some day!</div></div>Rachellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10124087896605983602noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-174444508960495416.post-66319086078862852472017-02-05T13:32:00.001-07:002017-02-05T13:32:52.829-07:00January progress, February's beginningHappy new year!<div>Sorry that I'm late in wishing you a great new year! It's the first guild meeting that I've ever attended. I was so excited. My friend and neighbor, Katie, invited me and we rode together. Katie blogs over at Lady Katherine's Wheel.</div><div><br></div><div>Today's meeting featured a trunk show by Melissa Corry of happyquiltingmelissa. I felt like I was bouncing out of my seat. I've wanted to meet her since I started following blogs and participated in the Dresden Challenge. I've participated in two of her quilt alongs now. It was wonderful to see her and her quilts in person. She brought all the quilts that are patterned and photographed in her book for Martingale called "Irish Chain Quilts". I want this book--it's on my Christmas list!</div><div><br></div><div>Here are some of my favorites:</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtrKyAC0deAKRQjZnwKpYi9lB7YuYffrv8ydZjYsaouXyv0u_PVOWln5gKlvnXnuCl9avcOg7Q3F9ZDdjkditFI82KR4YfsHY3YsIP60Nk8orwgsz6wPIJIrNLgs7YqCUw-iyLpI8uth8/s640/blogger-image-1368756063.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtrKyAC0deAKRQjZnwKpYi9lB7YuYffrv8ydZjYsaouXyv0u_PVOWln5gKlvnXnuCl9avcOg7Q3F9ZDdjkditFI82KR4YfsHY3YsIP60Nk8orwgsz6wPIJIrNLgs7YqCUw-iyLpI8uth8/s640/blogger-image-1368756063.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>This star chain is definitely my favorite! I went there to shop Row by Row Experience, for a pattern and a kit to swap. I was also looking a for a baby panel.<div><br></div><div>I found out just a few weeks ago, that my manager and his wife are not only expecting a baby girl, but he is also starting a new job at another hospital in our network....half the state away, in Southern Utah. So they are moving! I thought that a fun double-duty gift would be a baby quilt, but it would have to be simpler and less complicated than my usual work--and fast!</div><div><br></div><div>I finally found this cute Noah's Ark pre-printed panel, also pre-quilted. It just needed a trim and binding.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmvELejdr6KRL6Fu1bcS39_BwabzZKeTR-P9dWjC-MPEVHEzJXKSbSdiT1Ffa2DZD43WD1jeJ8Kvfnpz4ygNPbL0TQ-EEaQ54X1CWXlF6Vg-uFJWgw0qxEdcFDYevUf-6fd6BNZfOAkjs/s640/blogger-image--1962257584.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmvELejdr6KRL6Fu1bcS39_BwabzZKeTR-P9dWjC-MPEVHEzJXKSbSdiT1Ffa2DZD43WD1jeJ8Kvfnpz4ygNPbL0TQ-EEaQ54X1CWXlF6Vg-uFJWgw0qxEdcFDYevUf-6fd6BNZfOAkjs/s640/blogger-image--1962257584.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>But I couldn't just let the sparse, all-over quilting alone. It's also where we ate on our first date.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And, today,<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> my ironing board died. Life is busy life!</div><div><br></div><div>Again, I took my best friend Maggie with me. It's so wonderful to spend time with her. The only things that she knows about quilting, is what I share with her during our trip to the show, or when we spend time together. But she's never impatient as I go off on exclamations of ecstasy at different quilts or patterns or techniques that we see.</div><div><br></div><div>Maggie and I have another friend, Katie, who we knew at the same time. All three of us were neighbors in the same apartment building and church congregation during our college years. We've known each other at least 14 years! And we each got married to our husbands during the same summer!</div><div><br></div><div>Katie ended up attending the quilt show the same day that we did, and we found her! It was a lot of fun to spend time with my girlfriends, who share the love of hobbies, faith, and family (and similar tastes in art.) </div><div><br></div><div>Katie only has her domestic machine to piece and quilt with, like me. While we browsed the quilts and vendors, I shared my thoughts on machines that I've test-driven, and which ones that I'd like to use/purchase, if I could. One of the fun things this year, that I hope they continue, is the Quilter's Playland or Playground. Several new Bernina long arms, new Bernina sit-downs, and several other brands on different long-arm table sets, were all set up in one area. They had sample quilt sandwiches ready for use. Katie and I got excited and had to sit down and play at various machines. We even convinced Maggie to try a Bernina sit-down. We had a hard-time leaving! Now I know what my children feel like, when I tell them it's time to go home from the playground. ;-)</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs32uMaPkSm-ow-Y2ygkB0vKaDoM7mML_sKCnYtNVgGTSQd9kXAXym6PXvRV3-1fShlDh8kYFtxGIpcaiToBCJ5UmkyjTKge7YX8cf0f1ebRIHVJ2n8c47GXUsrXA-8RKlEcnUMdvhcSw/s640/blogger-image-550260014.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs32uMaPkSm-ow-Y2ygkB0vKaDoM7mML_sKCnYtNVgGTSQd9kXAXym6PXvRV3-1fShlDh8kYFtxGIpcaiToBCJ5UmkyjTKge7YX8cf0f1ebRIHVJ2n8c47GXUsrXA-8RKlEcnUMdvhcSw/s640/blogger-image-550260014.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This is one of my favorites from the Patriotic Challenge/Quilts of Valor section.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm3s2t1xCWceO_vU0M8C3czqPZtpG9kCTfKVNXFsIRIKRQXEJFktAUXons6QmGrQaToZoFtorPnrkTgFCa-YQZ7KtobngE5ZKZy2Y7GGfXWhUk8WKrFarVs88mFI-3KIfnCJQw6dMmaz4/s640/blogger-image--75298135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm3s2t1xCWceO_vU0M8C3czqPZtpG9kCTfKVNXFsIRIKRQXEJFktAUXons6QmGrQaToZoFtorPnrkTgFCa-YQZ7KtobngE5ZKZy2Y7GGfXWhUk8WKrFarVs88mFI-3KIfnCJQw6dMmaz4/s640/blogger-image--75298135.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This is a gorgeous hand-embroidered peacock quilt. And the variety of fabrics that are in the quilt are amazing.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This year also had a special exhibit and guest: Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilt Company. We loved her booth, but missed her there and at the Corton Shop's booth. But just as we were heading toward Jenny's exhibit's aisle, she and her hubby suddenly appeared! I cried out, and asked if we could meet her and get a picture. She was so kind to oblige, and give us big hugs, and her hubby was kind to snap pictures of us and crack jokes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6zzzdNAhRo8eoIb2zSAXD3tY6_lkitqzuXFHMgGVhjgynysuN6EkupAkU8z58iKTtRQFFTDaOXhiA6uOKslQpClu8cQrqdb5TrUV7lVi_wGm_0MeEhUoJjPW0kKhC1KitsKbP-HdZNXA/s640/blogger-image-2124495163.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6zzzdNAhRo8eoIb2zSAXD3tY6_lkitqzuXFHMgGVhjgynysuN6EkupAkU8z58iKTtRQFFTDaOXhiA6uOKslQpClu8cQrqdb5TrUV7lVi_wGm_0MeEhUoJjPW0kKhC1KitsKbP-HdZNXA/s640/blogger-image-2124495163.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfj9Scif4VfQGD7b7UevQHtf2crLHwiKdtYmheDcZ8A3RwnMFRxbziyDLc-l83o1yIMJACMMlenLsXj5bSdrWfNK1Gqjso5pfwhJrcyVv2tNoZ4rkOttEIf-IYI1sCGP7BTNSp7Iug8FA/s640/blogger-image-1978091266.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfj9Scif4VfQGD7b7UevQHtf2crLHwiKdtYmheDcZ8A3RwnMFRxbziyDLc-l83o1yIMJACMMlenLsXj5bSdrWfNK1Gqjso5pfwhJrcyVv2tNoZ4rkOttEIf-IYI1sCGP7BTNSp7Iug8FA/s640/blogger-image-1978091266.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And we were both star struck! Maybe I will make us matching FQ tote bags. :-)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Katie and I both bought Labyrinth patterns by Debby Maddie at H&W Fabrics, and I bought a Stonehenge eagle panel and a couple of teal-aqua half-yards. Hey, it was the day before Mother's Day!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Maggie and I got caught in a torrential Spring hail-and-rain thunderstorm on the freeway on the way home. Wow, was that a lot of wind and water!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It was a great day with my best friends and my favorite hobby. UPDATE:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since I am still getting requests based from this post, for a pattern, here is a link to my blog post in January 2014, with the tutorial !</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
http://claddaghsquiltsandstars.blogspot.com/2014/02/maltese-cross-dresden-block-tutorial.html?m=1</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Enjoy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is my EZ Dresden Challenge Quilt!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<strong>"Maltese Dresden"</strong></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is 24" x 24" square quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I call it my "<strong>Maltese Dresden</strong>" because it is the Maltese Cross, the symbol of American firefighters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used Robert Kaufman's "Marbleous" in Red for the main cross and fans and border, Robert Kaufman's "American Heroes" dalmation/firefighter print for the borders and backing, and random fat quarters for the fans.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yes, I did use the EZ Dresden ruler to cut the Dresden blades!</div>

I used Sue Pelland's "Leaves Galore" template ruler to help me cut those beautiful curves on the Dresden Plate blade units. I just left one blade out per quarter unit of the plate (16 total instead of 20).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hand-embroidered the "scramble" in the center circle of the cross. The "scramble" consists of the helmet, axe, Halligan bar, ladder, and bugle. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is my husband's fire helmet; I thought it was very appropriate to stage it with the quilt because it is a quilt for my husband, the firefighter and paramedic.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm so very grateful I found this challenge, because it enabled me to dream up and design a quilt block with the Maltese Cross, which I have been struggling to do for quite a while.</div>
I really felt like this deserved to be in the "Innovative" category. But by the time the design came together in my head, and I started with the mini quilt for the experimental phase and got that finished, I didn't have enough time or enough red Marbleous to do the required 50" size for Innovative. <br />

Now that I'm done with the challenge quilt, I'm going to use my design to create a twin-sized version, medallion-style, for my husband to take to the fire station with him, for his bed there. After all, he sleeps two nights a week there! I'm going to need a lot more of the "Marbleous!" in red to make it, though, so I need help finding some. :-) Rachellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10124087896605983602noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-174444508960495416.post-34478207369685645862016-04-08T19:26:00.001-06:002016-04-08T20:35:22.743-06:00Better binding with presser footI tried something new for binding the star sampler. Yes, it's quicker, but there's too much of a flap left over on the back when stitching in the ditch, and the binding doesn't finish at a nice, even width on the back. I enjoy sewing the binding to the back by hand, but it's slower than it used to be for me, and sometimes torturous, with my tendinitis now.</div><div><br></div><div>I searched for any more ideas. And I found an awesome tutorial by A Woman a Day, using her Bernina Flat-Fell Foot. She used the #71, which is the wider foot (like 8 mm wide), and cut her binding strips 2" wide.</div><div><br></div><div>https://awomanaday.com/2013/01/17/happy-feet-quilt-binding-edition/</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiekWXjUX0Iw-YdFM255Mq9aJWuPZ_l-nLay1234atOxtctZM9wancymk0HzyqNwHxeQLdo6_iTp_AwjSRXwLLi5OTHj-8yFoVCm4kjrEBI888yjYlTYtUJ_Hg-s0D4UxNtCEtw6JH_P_U/s640/blogger-image-821004125.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiekWXjUX0Iw-YdFM255Mq9aJWuPZ_l-nLay1234atOxtctZM9wancymk0HzyqNwHxeQLdo6_iTp_AwjSRXwLLi5OTHj-8yFoVCm4kjrEBI888yjYlTYtUJ_Hg-s0D4UxNtCEtw6JH_P_U/s640/blogger-image-821004125.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Even better--almost no pinning or clipping!</div><div><br></div><div>I'm very happy with the results ! However, it's important to have a thread matching the binding while on the back.</div><div><br></div><div>3-- <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">When working on the back, while securing the binding to the back, corners get a bit tricky. When </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">you are approaching the corners, get as close as you can--less than an inch. Then fold up the miter, and pin the mitered binding in place on the adjacent side that you're approaching. Then lower your needle into the quilt and binding, and remove the binding from the foot. Use a stiletto or fingers, and lower the foot on top of all the layers, and sew the binding to the corner. Back stitch to the edge of the adjacent side, and pivot 90 degrees to meet it. Back stitch again and sew forward a few stitches. Then lift the foot, place the binding back over the foot and into the foot roll, and continue the binding.</span></div></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Repeat for each corner.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf63TXfzdonvf1IQlj1QdP_C4LC9PmcytpmvVc2YGTUM_vla5jf6ctjIp5y5YUD_BDDmi9ArG-arSwcTmNFKbbko6GscPO7sLQzBIbEmbpVhcnxLhGY6jBDa0F3x4wPcqbUWXc9qqCgl4/s640/blogger-image--723901369.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf63TXfzdonvf1IQlj1QdP_C4LC9PmcytpmvVc2YGTUM_vla5jf6ctjIp5y5YUD_BDDmi9ArG-arSwcTmNFKbbko6GscPO7sLQzBIbEmbpVhcnxLhGY6jBDa0F3x4wPcqbUWXc9qqCgl4/s640/blogger-image--723901369.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Look at that, even-width binding on the front and back. Although he is a toddler and in a toddler bed, the bed still uses a crib mattress, so crib-sized is great. I like crib sizes to be about 44x60", slightly rectangular. (Yeah, he will be two in a two weeks!) It's totally a theme of Winter Stars, so I want to quilt lots of snowflakes.</div><div><br></div><div>I've found lots of snowflakes in QM's "501 Quilt Motifs" book, and other places. I trace the motifs on clear, ruled stencil plastic, then cut with a craft knife. I just can't decide whether to cut channels for the pencil, or just cut out the negative spaces.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiblftZvNGBY_0TMQuta6ImUfyKGZClavyK6yErV42P3FJnNN-pKNJq4MHkiyLEcRY0DfhH2LVKVoCMAW5NXjjXCHh9LRJhPxV0EG6n0Z5BNUQG4Ci70uZqP7tyhipWDAI56P-FHg4UKic/s640/blogger-image--1769823905.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiblftZvNGBY_0TMQuta6ImUfyKGZClavyK6yErV42P3FJnNN-pKNJq4MHkiyLEcRY0DfhH2LVKVoCMAW5NXjjXCHh9LRJhPxV0EG6n0Z5BNUQG4Ci70uZqP7tyhipWDAI56P-FHg4UKic/s640/blogger-image--1769823905.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxMvdB6S1hwXxMY2KtreppfoAI5NvxO_2V5EE1tLRE2j98tsm8XPEqll0rPNAJNMd09VcIjyqRMMnFhhoj9tRJdZzqLfVCk52MJJSyKEnj5L7mXcFkhm8l5X3OtRu4V0vqUNrD7gwuOJs/s640/blogger-image-1129553859.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxMvdB6S1hwXxMY2KtreppfoAI5NvxO_2V5EE1tLRE2j98tsm8XPEqll0rPNAJNMd09VcIjyqRMMnFhhoj9tRJdZzqLfVCk52MJJSyKEnj5L7mXcFkhm8l5X3OtRu4V0vqUNrD7gwuOJs/s640/blogger-image-1129553859.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I love the Celtic snowflake stencils I found at the Artful Stencil, too!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZknVxx9L8_wY-T6Y5VlGHMM0sGvT9gWmT0R_ivX5k392_sosCMdSk_1RmLgJXtOiOSJDVsVbuuOi9XDb8NwO-FO9MqQo_kbTiWEjvygywWhOvpHA6fPN1MwtDbbrOyRYFK4-YoD-EjQI/s640/blogger-image-1142518344.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZknVxx9L8_wY-T6Y5VlGHMM0sGvT9gWmT0R_ivX5k392_sosCMdSk_1RmLgJXtOiOSJDVsVbuuOi9XDb8NwO-FO9MqQo_kbTiWEjvygywWhOvpHA6fPN1MwtDbbrOyRYFK4-YoD-EjQI/s640/blogger-image-1142518344.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Rachellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10124087896605983602noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-174444508960495416.post-2661131297850027662015-12-31T20:40:00.001-07:002015-12-31T20:40:48.795-07:00December goals and progressHappy New Year's Eve!<div><br></div><div>I made progress on both my goals:</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUrGfklCRFPDTRTe_PrH4w6xVf81pcNumqZ4CLzbCLv9Ud2Moo6SvgDz_sdXUi0gC5nBlr68piqq70wBGbQEDo5H1fLL8qv-Q1fIBi1m3OpprHxI0mKuLLdU6zQe030DPdCIi_NgPEAnc/s640/blogger-image-1851223193.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUrGfklCRFPDTRTe_PrH4w6xVf81pcNumqZ4CLzbCLv9Ud2Moo6SvgDz_sdXUi0gC5nBlr68piqq70wBGbQEDo5H1fLL8qv-Q1fIBi1m3OpprHxI0mKuLLdU6zQe030DPdCIi_NgPEAnc/s640/blogger-image-1851223193.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Quilting the baby's crib star sampler.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_HWzWgOc03u0z6M78cDFqzRIwIFoiusOZ1tRLrwlP62e3nsl_YZqPoN899smj0KZwe3EDHWnlxyfwBkXShCqb4bLjd4Q5wY2H6fFfZuCJGbFNbg8MiMy6xNot-SCMOKAEH1Vkc2uR1Nw/s640/blogger-image-377341174.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_HWzWgOc03u0z6M78cDFqzRIwIFoiusOZ1tRLrwlP62e3nsl_YZqPoN899smj0KZwe3EDHWnlxyfwBkXShCqb4bLjd4Q5wY2H6fFfZuCJGbFNbg8MiMy6xNot-SCMOKAEH1Vkc2uR1Nw/s640/blogger-image-377341174.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Cut all pieces for the final 2 blocks of 2015 Pat Sloan Mystery.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5aRN9WemkU51YQ0gA_KSqiUM-zUKufEypMc0B9k-PfrzAH-p5IjYIqrb0G97TnFkyQR9Mf-PNoprFaECEiABom3cZXhSpiicUsAVQGoJO0xIK3qDhg6wIOUeEjeCoUf-u3em3UBwJ6Ac/s640/blogger-image--767480691.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5aRN9WemkU51YQ0gA_KSqiUM-zUKufEypMc0B9k-PfrzAH-p5IjYIqrb0G97TnFkyQR9Mf-PNoprFaECEiABom3cZXhSpiicUsAVQGoJO0xIK3qDhg6wIOUeEjeCoUf-u3em3UBwJ6Ac/s640/blogger-image--767480691.jpg"></a></div><br></div></div>Today, I also played with my new machine, Katrina. Isn't this snowman cute?!!! I followed the Quick Start Guide, and the snowman is the design the guide used to get started with embroidery unit. It was definitely a process--the snowman has 15 colors! I got pretty good at threading the machine to change colors, finding thread colors in my stash that are similar in the guide, and using the menus and function buttons. I also used just about all my types of thread that I have to get the colors, from Superior Masterpiece, to Connecting Threads Cotton, to Gutermann and Mettler polyester, and the Sulky rayon. It was a good opportunity to try out the threads and see which I liked and which Katrina seemed to like.</div><div><br></div><div>Does anyone know some places for good embroidery thread deals, especially for starter packs of multiple colors? Whoops!</div><div><br></div><div>Christmas at our house was splintered into a few pieces. My husband's shift at the firehouse should have been working both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but his department decided to split it with C shift. My husband worked the 23rd, drove home on Christmas Eve morning and we did family gifts. My husband's family came for the afternoon and dinner with gifts. My boys love their uncles and grandma.</div><div><br></div><div>Then I went to work for a few hours in the evening. When I got home, my husband was ready for bed, so I played Santa and put out gifts, sorted stockings, and put out cookies and drank milk. Ha ha ha. Hubby left for work in a snowstorm Christmas morning, and the boys were so excited for "Santa".</div><div><br></div><div>Christmas was fun, though.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQmm2D9cwj5RzAnY8o0uySrT7tcC5gC21Z67tub6UAYz6HOJ2uKqDqPosEGb5r2rayTj2kuEjKfkPrkgudm7DCEK5G54iMwfoVlc6H4jyn4hXTtWrAUDsMVTQXojAWOjU7XUk9CzBLcsg/s640/blogger-image-972726274.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQmm2D9cwj5RzAnY8o0uySrT7tcC5gC21Z67tub6UAYz6HOJ2uKqDqPosEGb5r2rayTj2kuEjKfkPrkgudm7DCEK5G54iMwfoVlc6H4jyn4hXTtWrAUDsMVTQXojAWOjU7XUk9CzBLcsg/s640/blogger-image-972726274.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">He loves Nick Jr's Paw Patrol!</div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-3nxAAT8iQ-sm9Xxz5SVWbbmPTqeKdGvXenQrIdR2XllWOfIt7p_UCfQQOu35AW9CdPjUswc4scsfDxM_sRZee8p4u_fj-Mf2OQnSVsgPn_ecAVoBYcOOlV-FHjt5X5EXOvrpszW-Muk/s640/blogger-image--2107804662.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-3nxAAT8iQ-sm9Xxz5SVWbbmPTqeKdGvXenQrIdR2XllWOfIt7p_UCfQQOu35AW9CdPjUswc4scsfDxM_sRZee8p4u_fj-Mf2OQnSVsgPn_ecAVoBYcOOlV-FHjt5X5EXOvrpszW-Muk/s640/blogger-image--2107804662.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The older boys love Star Wars and Marvel Avengers.</div><br></div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhAYm3gw7p9H8-YoSvAxm93I-zkUSjLTlIqD42gwN6p6uOvv8YFZWs4oyA0JRp1CfAxfah8CAp1pM8yKImvlDxhUsKhxHUtonm08mINfWucPZydRqeFcCxtQPAhr0Lsk_fopvAqGuDFUA/s640/blogger-image-1130158125.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhAYm3gw7p9H8-YoSvAxm93I-zkUSjLTlIqD42gwN6p6uOvv8YFZWs4oyA0JRp1CfAxfah8CAp1pM8yKImvlDxhUsKhxHUtonm08mINfWucPZydRqeFcCxtQPAhr0Lsk_fopvAqGuDFUA/s640/blogger-image-1130158125.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Santa got me a special gift: a new Bernina Bernette, Chicago 7. It's got very similar features to my Bernina 1090, it's a little smaller, but it has embroidery module, and lots more decorative stitches. Hubby/Santa even bought me the embroidery computer software to go with it! The maximum embroidery area is only a 5x7 hoop, but that's a great start. My favorite Bernina dealer is so wonderful, Dave's Bernina in Provo, Utah. It was an amazing deal from corporate Bernina, which included a free Bernina suitcase!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">During the past few days, I've been making some space for my new machine, unpacking it, trying it out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihtNj3yzDfzzfymJmvaT3ihbCnMZNMFLYgrJB0Bu3KoUgPFN26uZ50MGMZfgw5pfK6DhozVCBRLUQl_UCYmYVrbopuIzo9TKq0On6BlZeEazTZfQOYy4p_2RnumQ2lMD6gumoaJBVoy_w/s640/blogger-image--332370484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihtNj3yzDfzzfymJmvaT3ihbCnMZNMFLYgrJB0Bu3KoUgPFN26uZ50MGMZfgw5pfK6DhozVCBRLUQl_UCYmYVrbopuIzo9TKq0On6BlZeEazTZfQOYy4p_2RnumQ2lMD6gumoaJBVoy_w/s640/blogger-image--332370484.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I think her name is Katrina, to honor my Scandinavian roots. Then Monday, we took the boys bowling and yummy lunch at Cracker Barrell ! (That's our new favorite, family-friendly, yummy-comfort-food restaurant to eat at.) My brothers-in-law came again to play and eat, and my dad came as well. I'm so happy that my Dad was able to get a new job in Utah and move back "home". Amazingly, I had enough fabric to make the quilt two rows longer than the pattern called for, and the only thing I substituted was a solid red for the inside sashing instead of the stripe. I didn't need to order any extra fabric! (Good thing, too, because the fabric is out of print by Andover, and is very hard to find. I can't find any of the panel print.)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4-8_phspaI2SEqSIN3j9nQYJEXbxQtmD-RFL4fKtUFh5JAhuvW3ZYFVaSsx5g8RNEt11iuIAs8CHg1eVDbGzrb78WQPNdGOZeS9w_eYUPvek9LtMAJlMr7tJs0aFmHuCPau4h1jgYfYs/s640/blogger-image--690296969.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4-8_phspaI2SEqSIN3j9nQYJEXbxQtmD-RFL4fKtUFh5JAhuvW3ZYFVaSsx5g8RNEt11iuIAs8CHg1eVDbGzrb78WQPNdGOZeS9w_eYUPvek9LtMAJlMr7tJs0aFmHuCPau4h1jgYfYs/s640/blogger-image--690296969.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So, I have no idea what I'm going to use for backing, since I'll need about 5 yards.</div><br></div><div>Any ideas?</div><div>Go with something bright but totally different?</div><div>Find some other print of Eric Carle's books to use for backing? It really does pay off to do some Free-Motion Quilting every day. I'm feeling more relaxed and comfortable, and I'm getting more confident. I'm just limited in space, and somehow feel that if I had more space to maneuver, my lines could be straighter.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZbH_NEmoZEM6mnM_q3p4jcs5En23f-MGCZO9P4nXmax7aEWlIE35oiCQ2iRjZiKKbSJ__W3IdeOBfgqGJzvtVdPdmtCI56ZeQx2S9XgpyIPA14KjYa6vshRcbFC73jvWT23erWhk1nKU/s640/blogger-image--1607116126.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZbH_NEmoZEM6mnM_q3p4jcs5En23f-MGCZO9P4nXmax7aEWlIE35oiCQ2iRjZiKKbSJ__W3IdeOBfgqGJzvtVdPdmtCI56ZeQx2S9XgpyIPA14KjYa6vshRcbFC73jvWT23erWhk1nKU/s640/blogger-image--1607116126.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>This quilt is so heavy! Hubby is on shift, and my goal is to get them finished before he gets off. That way, they will be ready to hang when he gets home. He actually bought the wall hooks, months ago! He's picky about wall mounts and scews, and using the drill. And he'll actually need to measure some.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9gMy9DR8pZK8njrEz3T91FXuypVWMveL136XxauON80dvHby6IvWt6g2k5qdJhuTruZ1sjSR11B9yAH2JOkcSGqzJ_19pdTFv3SEpCuh7DFkxBTjddBXocBTiUWy6ejzu-sIlUhcwBGk/s640/blogger-image-699264652.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9gMy9DR8pZK8njrEz3T91FXuypVWMveL136XxauON80dvHby6IvWt6g2k5qdJhuTruZ1sjSR11B9yAH2JOkcSGqzJ_19pdTFv3SEpCuh7DFkxBTjddBXocBTiUWy6ejzu-sIlUhcwBGk/s640/blogger-image-699264652.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">What I used:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">--2 Fons and Porter Design Walls (basically felt-covered vinyl sheets with a 2" printed grid"</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">--2 cardboard cutting boards</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">--plenty of office staples and a standard stapler</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">--duct tape</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">--hot glue</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">First I measured and stapled the Design Walls to the top of the cutting boards, deciding where I wanted the hanging grommets. Then, I stapled along that top edge, and started down one side. Then I moved from the grommets and followed along the opposite side, pulling the vinyl slightly taut against the cardboard and stapling. I did need to trim the vinyl because it was too wide for the boards. I made sure to bend the staple points to lay flat on the back side. Then I covered all the raw edges with duct tape, especially where the staples were...one, to cover the staple backs and prevent the staples from snagging, and two, to create a nicer visual edge. After I worked on the first, I've noticed that the duct tape kept curling away from the felt...not creating a nice stick. I tried Tacky Glue, then tried hot glue. I like the hot glue for bonding the tape into the felt fibers.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Wa-la ! Two design boards that I can hang on a wall. Each a little more than 36" wide and about 72" long. Stiff, lightweight, foldable, portable. I can taken them down to take to a class, or take a project with me, or hang them on a different wall. Or even lay them on the floor and cut big pieces of batting off the roll, or measure backing.</div><br></div>Rachellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10124087896605983602noreply@blogger.com0
